TWO ARRESTED OVER WASHINGTON DC SUSPECTED CCTV HACK

Image
Two people have been arrested in London over a suspected hack of Washington DC's police surveillance system. A man and a woman, both understood to be 50, were arrested in Natal Road, Streatham, on 19 January, the National Crime Agency (NCA) has revealed. Data storage was reportedly compromised between 12 and 15 January, days before President Donald Trump's inauguration. The suspects, believed to be a British man and a Swedish woman, have been bailed until April. An NCA spokeswoman would not confirm why the individuals were arrested. She said "Inquiries are ongoing and we are unable to provide further information at this time." The  Washington Post claims  there was a cyber attack that affected 123 of 187 network video recorders across the city. Devices were infected with ransom ware, malicious software that encrypts files or otherwise locks users out until they pay, it said. City officials were left unable to record, forcing major citywide re-ins...

DER SPIEGEL: TRUMP'S BEHEADING COVER SPARKS CRITICISM

Image
Germany's influential weekly news magazine Der Spiegel has come under fire for a cover image showing US President Donald Trump beheading the Statue of Liberty. Some German newspapers criticised the cartoon, while the German vice-president of the European Parliament called it "tasteless". The cartoonist, Edel Rodriguez, said the image represented "the beheading of democracy". US-German relations have deteriorated under President Trump, who has criticised the policies of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. He said last month that her policy of welcoming masses of migrants who arrived in Germany had been a "catastrophic mistake". His trade adviser also recently attacked Germany for gaining unfair trade advantages from a "grossly undervalued" euro. The front cover image is similar to one  that appeared on the front page of the New York Daily News  in December 2015, also showing Mr Trump beheading the Statue of Liberty but in a less gory...

US REVERSES TRAVEL BAN OVER COURT RULING AS TRUMP FUMES

The US authorities have rolled back a controversial travel ban on people from seven mainly Muslim countries after a judge suspended it. The state department said it was reversing the cancellation of visas, 60,000 of which were revoked after President Donald Trump's order. Judge James Robart ruled there were legal grounds to challenge the ban. Mr Trump reacted furiously, calling Mr Robart's ruling "ridiculous" and vowing to restore his ban. People affected by the ban treated news of the suspension warily as airlines began allowing them to board flights to America on Saturday.
