Anti-Semitism, hatred of minorities 'corrupts society,' says Israeli President

Image
Jerusalem (CNN) Anti-Semitism and the hatred of minorities "corrupts society," Israeli President Reuven Rivlin warned in an exclusive interview with CNN. "For us, it is clear as daylight. Anti-Semitism is a presence in society that corrupts society itself," said Rivlin. "We try to explain to the whole world that if you don't fight against anti-Semitism, it will hit your societies. There are stereotypes present in societies that create a lack of understanding; treatment of minorities which is not humane or moral will corrupt societies." Responding to CNN's survey on anti-Semitism in Europe, Rivlin said Israel must always stand strong against anti-Semitism in all its forms and in all its locations. "We are diligent, and we have to be even more diligent, to explain in all those places where anti-Semitism is spreading, or returning, that we are not ready to accept it," Rivlin told CNN. China suspends scientists who claim to have produced first gene-edited babies

Hong Kong (CNN) China has suspended the research activities of the scientists who claimed to have created the world's first gene-edited babies, state-run Xinhua news reported Thursday. The moves comes after Chinese scientist He Jiankui announced Monday that two ostensibly healthy twin girls had been born this month from embryos altered to make them resistant to HIV. Chinese authorities called He's claim "extremely abominable in nature" and a violation of Chinese law, according to Xinhua. "The gene-edited twins matter reported by the media has brazenly violated Chinese laws and regulations and breached the science ethics bottom line, which is both shocking and unacceptable," said Xu Nanping, vice minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Xinhua reported. He, an associate professor at the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, claims to have used a gene-editing tool known as CRISPR-cas9, which can insert or deactivate ...

Congo Ebola outbreak is 2nd largest, 2nd deadliest

Image
(CNN) The current Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo -- with 426 total cases, including 245 deaths -- is now the second largest and second deadliest in history, according to Thursday's report from the nation's Ministry of Health. A 2000-01 outbreak in Uganda included 425 cases and caused 224 deaths, according to the World Health Organization. The deadliest outbreak occurred in West Africa in 2014, when the disease killed more than 11,000 people. "This is a milestone nobody wanted to hit," WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic wrote in an email. On average, Ebola -- which causes fever, severe headache and in some cases hemorrhaging -- kills about half of those infected, but case fatality rates in individual outbreaks have varied. The latest outbreak in Congo, which began in August, has a case fatality rate of 57%. Of the total cases, 379 have been confirmed, and 47 are probable, according to the ministry. An additional 87 suspected cases are under ...

El Chapo Trial Has Yet to Reveal Mexico’s Dark Secrets of Narco-Corruption

Image
Jurors in the trial of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, known as El Chapo, have been limited in what they have been allowed to hear about bribery allegations involving Mexican presidents. Credit Credit Justin Lane/European Pressphoto Agency, via Shutterstock For a moment, the trial of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, the Mexican drug lord known as El Chapo, seemed like it might turn into a kind of truth-and-reconciliation commission that would reveal, not only the details about the defendant’s life of crime, but also secrets about narco-corruption in Mexico. But after a flurry of prosecution filings and rulings by the judge in the first three weeks, it now appears unlikely the trial will become a sweeping exposé on bribery. The jury has heard plenty so far about payoffs to the Mexican police and politicians, but there is much they have not heard — and probably never will. Setting limits on evidence at criminal trials is common in order to focus on specific charges against specific individuals. Bu...

A real European army: A naive or prudent idea?

Image
A new strategic debate has engulfed not only the European continent but also other great powers across the globe. The idea of an EU collective defense, now dubbed as “an integrated EU military” is not new—as it has in the past been briefly mentioned by Silvio Berlusconi when he was the Italian prime minister, but more recently, by Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. Today, however, the idea of European Army has been resurrected in response to the Trump administration’s decision to double down on its criticism of the EU members that have failed to adequately fulfill their burden sharing obligations insofar as their financial contributions to NATO are concerned.  Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty has also provoked such a reaction from both France and Germany. Considering the old Franco-German competition and the upcoming European elections, it should come as no surprise that this idea, considered “naïve” by some and “pr...

Trump CLOSES US border checkpoint at Tijuana as migrant caravan BREAKS THROUGH fence

Image
THE US border has been closed between San Diego and Tijuana with riot police swooping after the migrant caravan saw scores of people rush to the checkpoint. An unverified video emerged online showing the migrant caravan breaking through a border fence. It is thought the migrants were then pushed back by police with pepper spray. Traffic was stopped at the border as the caravan approached the checkpoint. In another video captured in Mexico, hundreds of members of the caravan could be seen marching across a canal toward the border. Traffic in both directions has been suspended at the San Ysidro port of entry. The Army was seen installing a metal barrier as a secondary line of defence against the migrants. In front of the 6ft metal gates, riot police stood five deep. Just in front of them a fire was seen raging. As Mexican police in high visibility jackets and standard uniform walked towards migrants, they were shouted at from above as crowds gathered on a bridge ne...
